Description

This object is a rarely imaged galaxy group, led by the magnitude 10.4 bright lenticular (lens-shaped) galaxy NGC 584 located 65 million light years away in the constellation of Cetus at a declination of -7 degrees. The galaxy spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years.

The two galaxies on either side of NGC 584 are the 13.2 magnitude galaxy NGC 586 on the right, and the 15.2 magnitude galaxy PGC 1028168 on the left. This group of galaxies is only together by our line of sight - they are not gravitationally interacting. Not much is written about these galaxies in the literature.

Although I should be PC and say that all DSO objects are my friends, the reality is that I really don't like lenticular galaxies very much. Ellipticals are not far behind. Both are tough to process, and despite my best efforts I am never happy with the result. Just not a lot of interesting structure, plus the small brightness gradient in the outer galaxy reaches makes for an unsatisfying image for me.
